The Gamble House Workshops

During The Machine Project Field Guide to the Gamble House we will be offering a variety of workshops hosted throughout the Gamble House grounds. Please note that workshops do not include a tour, but are an opportunity for a strange and intimate engagement with the home.


Solar Sun Chime Workshop with David Casey

Saturday September 20th from 11am – 2pm
in The Gamble House Basement // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103
$50 for Machine Project Members and FoGH// $60 for General Public

Ever wanted to learn how to build your own solar-powered gadgets for use in sustainable installations & outdoor computing? This workshop will provide an introduction to attaching mini solar panels to small motors and other battery-powered devices. Wire your own simple ‘sun chime’ using solar cells a few simple electronic components such as resistors & potentiometers. Previous soldering experience not required.

Plant Preservation and Natural Perfumery Workshop with Divya Anantharaman

Saturday September 20th from 1pm – 4pm
on The Gamble House Rear Terrace // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103
$60 for Machine Project Members // $70 for General Public

Participants learn the basics of preserving plants and creating natural perfumes, leaving the workshop with a salting/drying box, a 3oz bottle of their own fragrance, printed recipes and guides, as well as a newly grown fascination with plants.

Paper Cutting Workshop with Kaitlynn Redell

Saturday September 20th from 4pm – 7pm
in The Gamble House Attic // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103

Participants learn techniques for template design and paper cutting in styles drawn from intricate architectural and interior design motifs found throughout the Gamble House.

Letter Writing Workshop with Mercedes Texido

Sunday September 21st from 4pm – 7pm
in The Gamble House Attic // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103
$15 for Machine Project Members and FoGH // $25 for General Public

Using correspondence examples from The Gamble House inhabitants, participants will learn letter writing techniques through both the form (script, paper, envelopes) and content of period specific letter writing.

The Gamble Birdhouse Workshop with Scout Regalia

Sunday, September 28th from 11am – 2pm
on The Gamble House Back Lawn // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103
$25 for Machine Project Members and FoGH // $35 for General Public

Workshop participants build their own edible birdhouse inspired by the architectural elements and detailing of the Gamble House with nuts, seeds, bird feed brittle, and other aviary accommodating accoutrements.

Annunciator Workshop with Raphael Arar & Chris Weisbart

Sunday, September 28th from 2pm – 5pm
in The Gamble House Basement // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103
$60 for Machine Project Members and FoGH// $70 for General Public

Participants learn how primitive concepts of wireless technology paved the way for modern technologies, such as WiFi signals, by studying Gamble House examples. After touring the house and exploring the Gamble House’s Annunciator, participants build their own doorbell complete with electromagnetic circuit.

The Urban Cat Architecture Workshop with Keith Rocka Knittel

Wednesday, October 1st from 7pm – 10pm

Learn how to design a cat dwelling by examining historical references, construction techniques and designs.

Soap Making Workshop with Lisa Anne Auerbach

Saturday, October 4th from 2pm – 5pm
on The Gamble House Lawn // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103

Learn how to make cold process soap with a reusable mold. Participants take home their own citrus soap inspired by the Gamble House—that is, the “House That Soap Built”—off of Orange Grove Boulevard.

Embroidering in Architecture Workshop with Jenny Hart

Saturday October 4th from 4pm – 7pm
On Aunt Julia’s Sleeping Porch // 4 Westmoreland Pl, Pasadena, CA 91103

Participants learn the basics of hand embroidery as they stitch an Art Nouveau design onto a throw-pillow cover they can keep.
