Public School sign-up, REBAR event, and Video Circuitbending

So much is going on these days — important new developments in the presidential election, the daily devaluation of portabella sandwiches; the economy is even affecting the business of intergalactic bookies.

In worrisome times like these, wouldn’t it be nice to have someplace to turn where you can learn about fluid dynamics and nautical knot-tying, just in case we’re all sent down river? It turns out there is!

Machine Project and the Public School have joined forces to bring a series of classes to LACMA this month, featuring ventures into boat construction and Moby Dick; a reading group touching on use of space, site specificity and revolving bars; and the economy of giant-ass sculptures, among others. Details, schedule and sign-up here:

We have a new class taking place at Machine Project, too — for the first time, an intermediate Circuitbending class for bent video! Use a vintage computer system or small color tv to create scrambly video art. Class takes place Saturday Oct 25 – Sunday Oct 26th. Sign up here:

And not to be missed! This Saturday night, October 18th at 8pm, please join us for a discussion with REBAR, the masterminds behind PARK(ing) Day LA. REBAR is a collective of artists, designers and activists based in San Francisco. Through methods of sampling and remixing, similar to those employed by DJs, REBAR “samples” and “remixes” constituent elements of the social and physical landscape to create new meaning and to expose arbitrary assumptions about the systems of regulation that determine the structures of the built world. Presentation with q&a to follow.

And for those of you who didn’t make it to the opening last weekend, Desiree Holman’s video installation The Magic Window will be available for viewing through October. Open weekends approximately 12-5pm and weekdays by appointment (call ahead).
