Description:

The Dear Diary Book Club will read deceased artists’ diaries in hopes of finding clues, instruction, guidance, on the journey of a creative person through their life and work. We will investigate how time, the market, and modern life has or has not altered the artist’s struggles in society. The Club will make friends and kin with artists through space and time.

During the meetings we will discuss the diary of a selected accomplished visual artist. Each club member will read in the off-period off the week between meetings, and should come to class prepared for discussion. In addition to the discussion, there will be an extra-curricular project based on the diary of the day. For example, we will eat a meal based on Pontormo’s recorded meal for that day. The Club meets for 1.5 hours, once a week for five weeks.

The first text will be provided, but participants may need to find and bring in subsequent texts on their own, depending on what gets selected during the first meeting.

Syllabus:

5/29/11 – 1st meeting: select texts based on Emily’s initial list and other suggestions, distribute first text (Pontormo’s diary), discussion about diaries and journals and artist’s practices.

6/5/11 – 2nd meeting: distribute remaining texts, discussion of Pontormo’s Diary and meal based on Pontormo’s diary.

6/12/11 – 3rd meeting: discussion of text #2

6/19/11 – 4th meeting: discussion of text #3

6/26/11 – 5th meeting: discussion of text #4
