Fall Schedule
Summer vacation was lovely, unfortunately we’re ending it early to get a couple events in during August.
We’re starting out on Saturday August 12, with a launch party for the new issue of Make (Backyard Biology). That will be awesome.
Next weekend after that (Sunday August 20th), The Fallen Fruit collective (who brought us the DXM/Smoke Bomb/Ice cream chemistry lab) will be conducting public jam making festivities. Bring your own bread for toast and jam spreading.
Our Fall exhibition schedule proper begins on August 26th, with the opening of the Menger Sponge Business Card by Dr Jeannine Mosely. Curated by the Institute for Figuring, this show features a level 3 Menger Sponge After 9 years of effort, involving hundreds of folders all over America, the Business Card Menger Sponge was completed. The resulting object is comprised of 66,048 cards folded into 8000 interlinked sub-cubes, with the entire surface paneled to reveal the Level 2 and Level 3 fractal iterations. In conjunction with OSME 4, the fourth international conference on Origami in Science, Mathematics and Education, being held at Caltech.
On Sunday Sept 10, Dr Mosely will present a lecture on the logical challenge of decomposing this fractal form into manufacturable subunits and on the structural considerations of building such a large object out of business cards. The audience will be invited to make their own business card cubes and to collaborate in making a Level 1 sponge.
September 26, Machine Project board member Fritz Haeg presents Edible Estates, Edible Estates is an attack on the American front lawn and everything it has come to represent. An ongoing series of talks, workshops, and organic vegetables
Nov 4th is the opening date for Untitled (Silver) a new film by Takeshi Murata. That will be installed in the gallery until December.
