Microtones, Microscores, and a Microtheater

This week at the Hammer Museum…

Singing by Numbers
Friday June 4, 4-7pm

Laura Steenberge and Catherine Lamb, leaders of the experimental women’s choir Singing by Numbers, will perform in the Luisa Lambri galleries. Laura and Cat are interested in the exploration of the physics of sound waves through voice. The notes they sing are not named ‘do-re-mi’ or ‘c-d-e’, but are instead named by numbers. The numbers relate to the harmonic series: a naturally occurring system of pitches that is based on the physics of vibrations.

Microscores in our Microtheater
Saturday June 5, 1-4pm

Jessica Catron and Orin Hildestad will present microscores for violin and cello in the Little William Theater. These 30 second pieces of music have been composed specifically for Jessica and her collaborator Johnny Chang who now live in Berlin. Lucky for us, Orin is here to fill Johnny’s shoes. Since its inception in 2001, the Microscore Project has commissioned and performed over 300 miniature works from artists around the world – including Pauline Oliveros, Peter Ablinger, Philip Brownlee, Chiyoko Szlavnics, Harold Budd, Nels Cline, and James Tenney. Come check out some huge music in our tiny theater.
