School of Neolithic Skills

Foraging in Westwood.

This afternoon outing will take place in the dense urban jungles of Westwood, CA. Mike Metzger will lead up to 15 participants through sidewalks, alleys, public land and everywhere else in between to forage for edible plants. The group will then gather and make a large wild salad and then make a dressing from only fruits that they have gathered on their hunt. The group will meet in the lobby at 12pm and then reconvene in the courtyard to make the salad at 3pm.

Bamboo Workshop Weekend at the Hammer

March 13, 2010, 1 – 5pm and March 14, 2010, 1 – 5pm

Mike Metzger will lead a two-day workshop on making things from bamboo. Each day the workshop would be about 4 hours long. On Saturday, the workshop will focus on Bamboo mat-making and on Sunday Metzger will instruct participants in Bamboo cup carving with metal/stone tools with a special woodsy lunch of locally harvested bamboo shoots.

Workshops will meet in the Hammer Lobby

*Please note the workshops are different for each day and independent of one another. Participants are not required to sign up for both days!

Details on workshop:

Day 1 : March 13, 2010, 1 – 5pm
Bamboo Mat-Making

Participants will trim, and carve a stack of locally harvested bamboo rods. Then each student will twine each rod together to make a large floor mat. These mats have been used for sleeping, for window curtains, etc. Size of each mat will depend on how much bamboo we have.

Requirement: Each student must bring a knife.

Day 2: March 14, 2010, 1 – 5pm
Artisan bamboo cup-making w/ bamboo shoots for lunch

Aside from its durable strength and durability, ancient seafaring people have used bamboo for storing rain water for thousands of years. Today participants will carve their own bamboo cup using both stone and metal tools, along with a special lunch of locally gathered bamboo shoot. Information on processing bamboo shoots will be included in the class.
