Jacqueline Waters’ One Sleeps the Other Doesn’t was recently published by Ugly Duckling Presse.
She is the author of one previous collection, A Minute without Danger (Adventures in Poetry), and edits The Physiocrats, a pamphlet press. She will be reading work from One Sleeps the Other Doesn’t along with new work. Her poems thrillingly, in manners soft and harsh, smear our cultural and linguistic landscapes and poetic inheritances into newly discomfiting shapes.
Daniel Tiffany is the author of six books of poetry and criticism. He’s also a translator of writing by Cesare Pavese, Sophocles, and Georges Bataille. He is a recipient of the Berlin Prize for 2012, awarded by the American Academy. In addition to reading his work Daniel will be showing a film–“Das Blaue Licht,” a collaboration by Daniel and Brandon Downing. It’s a poetic melodrama, drawing on passages from Daniel Tiffany’s “Privado” (Action Books, 2010) and scenes cobbled together from Leni Riefenstahl’s legendary ‘mountain movie,’ 1932’s “The Blue Light.” Its soundtrack is the opening 16 bars of Schubert’s Ninth Symphony, 1st Movement, slowed 1306% and reprocessed. This will be the LA premiere. Daniel writes some of the most exciting, creative prose on poetics of our day. His poetry is equally innovative and eclectic, inventing intriguing new forms that play with prior forms as divergent as army marching chants and middle English verse.
