This one day workshop will teach you how to build a small and portable spring reverb unit for use in your home studio, with your guitar amp or really with anything you want. As part of this class you will learn basic skills such as soldering, making a small power amplifier, making a small preamp , and some other basic skills necessary for building electronic devices. Students must be old enough to solder and handle a drill. Everything for the class will be provided, and no prior knowledge is necessary.

If you present video work using DVDs, a laptop, or a Mac mini in a gallery setting that has limited security or tech support then this is for you! In this workshop we will cover getting started with Raspberry Pi computers, with an emphasis on creating a super-simple HD video player for gallery environments. Participants will create a 1080p HD video player on the Raspberry Pi that connects to a HDMI flatscreen monitor and, when booted, will immediately start playing your HD video content. No buttons, no software, no instruction sheets . . just plug it in and your videos start playing. We’ll provide all the materials, and you’ll leave the class with a functioning HD video player for you to keep. Filmmakers, video artists, VJs, and photographers are encouraged to attend, but anyone with a general curiosity about the Raspberry Pi and Linux is welcome to attend.

Instructors: Robin and Rajen Sukhadia

Robin Sukhadia, former Machine Project artist-in-residence, and his father Rajen Sukhadia will lead an in-depth three hour workshop focused on the raga and tala (melody and rhythm) of north Indian classical music. Through recitation and hands-on playing of tabla bols, students will learn about the structure of the drum, basic compositions, and posture. Singing exercises will expose students to the basics of the sargam (melodic scale), and how to adapt scales in basic ragas. Multimedia and listening exercises will give students a deeper understanding of the context and history of north Indian classical music and its global impact. This class is suitable for absolute beginners as well as intermediate students, all ages are welcome and abla pairs will be available in the gallery for participants to use!

Throughout this workshop participants will be pairing experimental casting methods with traditional mold-making to create work that is first classical and then distorted. Students will learn the basics of several casting materials and methods on the first day, only to turn them on their heads during the second. During the first day, we will each make a small life-cast from our own bodies (fingers, toes, heels, elbows, etc.). We will also pour a silicone mold of a small object you bring from home. On day two, we will begin casting into our silicone molds and “found molds” in several materials, experimenting with each along the way. We will pigment our resins, reshape and resculpt our waxes as they cool, and use our found object molds to create negative space casts. Students may choose to incorporate their new life-casting skills as well. All molds and casts you produce in class will be yours to keep!

Participants should be high school age or older.
