Dear Friends,
Hi, it’s Mark Allen here. I believe this is the 13th year that I’ve sat down to my computer and asked a bunch of people I might not even know to send money to support an art project I can’t control and don’t completely understand. What began as an empty storefront that hosted experiments by artists, technologists and random weirdos, has grown into an empty storefront, theatre, apartment, series of museum interventions, invasions of public parks, videos, publications, curated walks, and haunted houses by artists, technologists and random weirdos.
When I first started Machine, I remember sitting down with a friend who ran an art space in San Francisco and asking her for advice. We talked for a long time, but one thing she said really stuck out to me. She said “Whatever you do, don’t start a non-profit!”. I DID NOT FOLLOW HER ADVICE.
But you know, I’m glad I didn’t. Because before Machine I was one scared lamb wandering around trying to get traction to climb the vertiginous mountain peaks of the art world. Now I’m a weirdo among you weirdos, and we’ve made our own little hill to picnic on. And now to extend and deform the metaphor, we remembered to bring everything to the picnic except bundles of cash. And all the ants are super nice and cute (hi ants!) but they ate all the money in our cash box and now we need to pay the rent.
We just launched our NEW WEBSITE! and simplified our memberships into $5, $10, or $25 a month, so what could be easier? And just think of all the secret perks, invitations and benefits you will receive through the year!
PLEASE HELP DO IT RIGHT NOW DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT IT’S SUPER EASY.
